Here are a few things you should look out for when buying all-terrain tires to make to most out of your buck:

Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake

If the region where you’re located sees snowfall and black ice, it’s important to keep an eye out for tires marked with the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol. A Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol that is branded on a tire’s sidewall indicates that the tire meets all the testing requirements to be rated for sever snow service.

If you have a chance to grab a set of all-terrains with the TPMS symbol for cheap, I would strongly advise you to do so.

However, keep in mind that all-terrain tires with the TPMS symbol don’t perform as well as dedicated winter/snow tires with the TPMS symbol.

Adequate Siping

Sipes are very thin cuts that go across the treads, that are very effective in improving grip on snow and ice. If you can’t get a tire with a Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol, try to at least get a tire with adequate siping.

Large Tread

An aggressive tread, with deep grooves and spaces between the tread blocks is what allows the all-terrain tire to provide traction off-road. Deep treads allow you to run the same tires for longer, since they have so much reserve rubber.
