LED Tail Light Buying Guide and Installation How-To

What to Look for When Buying LED Tail Lights for Jeep Wrangler
There are a number of things you should keep in mind when searching for the best LED tail light for a Jeep Wrangler. Make sure you keep the following points in mind before you make a purchase.
Ease of installation
All tail lights on this list are Plug & Play, meaning they are extremely easy to install. Some tail lights require you to make modifications to either your Jeep or the tail light. This often includes doing the wiring yourself and other modifications in order to make the tail light sit flush with the body of the Jeep; not the case with Plug & Play tail lights.
They come with all the hardware you’ll need to do the job. They feature built-in resistors and only require you to plug the new tail light back into the original connector – that’s it. The Plug & Play feature is definitely something you’d want to have in your new LED tail lights as that way you’ll save a lot of time and make the whole process effortless.
Brightness
Tail lights are an important safety item and should be bright enough to be visible to other drivers. LEDs are much more efficient, and thus much brighter than incandescent bulbs that are in your original tail lights.
However, brightness varies with each aftermarket LED tail light, which means you’ll have to keep an eye out on the Lumen output that the tail lights produce. A higher number of Lumens means a brighter tail light.
Lifespan
LED tail lights will last much longer than incandescent bulbs because they are shockproof. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs, they don’t have a fragile filament to heat up and burn out, therefore LED lights last over 10 times longer.
However, excessive heat and moisture are the biggest enemies of LED tail lights. That’s why I advise buying LED tail lights that are weatherproof, as they tend to last much longer.
Protection
Jeeps are durable all-terrain vehicles and your LED tail lights should not be afraid of a few bruises and bumps. Make sure that your tail lights of choice are made from quality materials that are capable of protecting the internal circuitry from outside elements. As a general rule of thumb, ABS plastic and PMMA lenses are more durable than their cheaper counterparts.
Fitment
Nobody wants to spend money on a pair of LED tail lights just to find out they don’t fit your Jeep or require further modifications in order to fit flush. Make sure that the tail light of your choice fits your Jeep model and year.
How to Replace the Tail Lights on a Jeep Wrangler
One of the reasons why Jeeps are so popular and loved by enthusiasts is that they are extremely easy to work on. Both tail lights can be replaced in just under 5 minutes and the only tool you’ll need is a Philips head screwdriver.
Step 1. Undo the two innermost tail light screws. Yep, you’re not mistaken, the tail light on your Jeep Wrangler is held on by only two screws. Don’t worry though, as they are more than enough to hold the tail light in place.
Step 2. Remove the tail light. Once you get the two innermost screws out, gently pull the tail light out.
Step 3. Disconnect the tail light. While gently pushing in the tab on the single grey connector with one hand, separate them apart. Make sure to hold your tail light tight to avoid dropping it on the ground.
Step 4. Mount the resistor that came with your LED tail light to the bracket. If your LED tail light has a resistor inside the tail light, you should skip this step and the step after this.
Some aftermarket LED tail lights to require you to mount the resistor separately from the tail light in order to ensure proper cooling of the resistor as it does get hot. Consult the installation manual that came with your LED tail light first.
Secure the resistor to the bracket with the fasteners that came with the tail light. Make sure the resistor makes good contact with the bracket, as the bracket itself acts as a heatsink. Attach the clips that came with your tail light to the bracket.
Step 5. Mount the bracket with the resistor to the internal sheet metal of the quarter panel. Use the clips to secure the bracket onto sheet metal. Do consult the installation manual for this step as it could be different for your tail light.
Make sure the resistor is securely mounted to the frame and that it won’t come into contact with the wiring as it gets very hot. Use zip ties to rout the wiring away from the resistor.
Step 6. Reconnect the new LED tail light. Plug in the connectors until you feel a click. Gently tug to see if they aren’t loose.
Step 7. Attach the new tail lights. Secure the light with the same screws but make sure to give the light a wiggle in each direction to make sure there are no gaps before you tighten the screws.
